Moorhen

It was a cloudy, cool and windy day. We didn’t feel like heading back to Savannah to walk the historic district as it wasn’t a great day for photos. So we headed about an hour south to Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge. What a delightful surprise this turned out to be. There is a four mile road that takes you through the refuge to the major ponds that attract wintering waterfowl. Some roads are closed such as the nesting areas. We didn’t see the wood storks that the refuge is known to attract and the office was closed for the weekend so we couldn’t ask anyone. However we did see nine species: heron (great blue and tricolor), white egret, anhinga, ibis, cormorant, Moorhen, tree swallows and yellow breasted warbler.

On the way home on Hwy 17 near Newport, Georgia, Steve said “We can’t miss that” as he made a quick U-turn or as quick a one as a diesel crew cab Silverado can make. On our right, no now on our left was a sign saying Smallest Church In America. This is Christ’s Chapel built in 1947 as a non-denominational church and used intermittently even today. I am a deep breath over five feet so Steve used me in front of the entrance to give the picture some scale. The church is the size of a large backyard storage shed with twelve chairs for parishioners. Even the stained glass windows are reduced in proportion. There is a pulpit and sanctuary. The web questions whether it is really the smallest and states this is a very competitive category. We wonder where the others might be? We signed the guest book and joined people from around the world who have stopped here. Another hidden gem discovered!
